How to make a Narwhal Granny-Inspired Security Blanket

Today, I am excited to release to you my narwhal security blanket. I love using granny squares! When I use granny squares in my designs, I don’t have to use much brain power because they are so easy, fun, and quick to do.

I decided to use my small narwhal from my previous pattern and turn it into a lovey. I decided on the variegated yarn with I Love This Yarn because of the ocean colors! I hope you love this pattern as much as I do.

Today is my youngest daughter Bella’s 8th birthday. What better to celebrate than to release a new pattern!

Materials:

150 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Print 5 oz/142 grams, 252 yards/230 meters in Surf’s Up
65 yards, Worsted Size 4, I love This Yarn Solids 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Soft Blue.
20 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in White.
10 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Medium Blue.
HOOKS: US J/10 6 mm; US G/6 4.0 mm
Polyfil
Yarn needle to weave in ends.
Stitch markers
Safety eyes (optional)
Scissors

Experience Level: Beginner

Gauge:

11.5 stitches x 6.5 rows = 4” x 4” square blocked.

Pattern used for gauge:  DC

Size:

13” x 13” x 2” Approximately

Pattern Key:

SC – single crochet

DC – Double Crochet

Sc2tog – single crochet decrease

Sl st – slip stitch

FO – finish off

St/sts – stitch/stitches

Ch – chain

Rnd(s) – round(s)

MC – magic circle

Notes:

• Read through the entire pattern first.
• Lovey Blanket is made in joined rounds as a traditional granny square.
• Narwhal head/body, fins, horn, and tail are done in continuous rounds. Do NOT join while making each of them. Use stitch markers to know where your first stitch in the round is.
• Sl St does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
• Repeat stitches between * and * around.
• Alternative to MC – Ch 2; work number of SC specified in the 2nd chain from the hook.
• Ch 3 counts as a DC throughout the pattern.

Pattern Instructions:

Lovey Blanket:

Using J Hook and Color A, Ch 4; sl st to the 1st ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC in each round throughout the pattern); 2 DC into the ring; Ch 2; *3 DC into the ring; Ch 2.*  Repeat from *-* 2 more times; 1 sl st in the top of Ch 3 to Join.  (12 DC)

Rnd 2:  Sl st in the next 2 sts and in the Ch 2 space; Ch 3; (2 DC; Ch 2; 3 DC) in the same ch space; *Ch 1; (3 DC, Ch 2; 3 DC) in the next Ch 2 space*  Repeat from *-* 2 more times; ch 1; sl st in the top of Ch 3 to join.   (24 DC)

Rnd 3:  Sl st in the next 2 sts and in the Ch 2 space; Ch 3; (2 DC; Ch 2; 3 DC) in the same ch space;  ; *Ch 1; (3 DC  in Ch 1 space, Ch 1) in each ch 1 space to the corner; (3 DC; Ch 2; 3 DC) in Ch 2 space at the corner.  Repeat from * 2 more times.  Ch 1; (3 DC in Ch 1 space; Ch 1) in each Ch 1 space to the beginning of the round.  Sl st to the top of Ch 3 to join.  (36 DC)

Rnd 4:  Repeat round 3.  (48 DC)

Rnd 5:  Repeat round 3.  (60 DC)

Rnd 6:  Repeat round 3.  (72 DC)

Rnd 7:  Repeat round 3.  (84 DC)

Rnd 8:  Repeat round 3.  (96 DC)

Rnd 9:  Repeat round 3.  (108 DC)

Rnd 10:  Repeat round 3.  (120 DC)

Sl st in the next 2 DC sts and FO.  Weave in your ends.

Head/Body:

Rnd 1:  Using Color B and G Hook, Create MC;  6 SC in the MC.  (6 sts)

Rnd 2:   2 SC in the each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 3:  *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (18 sts)

Rnd 4:  *SC in the next 2 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (24 sts)

Rnd 5:  *SC in the next 3 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (30 sts)

Rnd 6:  *SC in the next 4 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (36 sts)

Rnds 7-10:  SC in each st around.  FO Color B and join Color C in the last stitch of round 10 (36 sts)  (4 rounds total)

Rnd 11-12:  SC in each stitch around.  (36 sts)  (2 rounds total)

****Insert safety eyes between Rnds 8 and 9 with 4 stitches between each eye.****

Rnd 13:  *SC in the next 4 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (30 sts)

****Start stuffing Narwhal****

Rnd 14:  *SC in the next 3 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (24 sts)

Rnd 15:  *SC in the next 2 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (18 sts)

Rnd 16:  *SC in the next st; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (12 sts)

****Stuff Narwhal****

Rnd 17:  Sc2tog around.  FO with 4” tail to weave in and out of the front loops to close the hole.  Weave in tail.  (6 sts)

Horn:

Rnd 1:  Using Color D, create MC;  4 SC in MC.  (4 sts)

Rnd 2:  SC in each st around.  (4 sts)

Rnd 3:  *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat once.  (6 sts)

Rnds 4-7:  SC in each st around.  FO with a 6” tail to sew to Narwhal Head.  (6 sts)  (4 total rounds)

****Stuff Horn****

Fins: Make 2

Rnd 1:  Using Color B, create a MC;  6 SC in MC.  (6 sts)

Rnd 2:  SC in each st around.  (6 sts)

Rnd 3:  *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (9 sts)

Rnds 4-6:  SC in each st around.  FO with a 8” tail to sew to Narwhal.  (9 sts)  (3 total rounds)

DO NOT stuff and fold flat sewing the ends closed.

Tail:

Rnd 1:  Using Color B, create a MC;  6 SC in MC.  (6 sts)

Rnd 2:  SC in each st around.  (6 sts)

Rnd 3:  2 SC in each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 4:  SC in each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 5:  *SC in the next 5 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (14 sts)

Rnds 6-10:  SC in each st around.  FO with a 8” tail to sew to Narwhal.  (14 sts)   (5 rounds total)

DO NOT stuff and fold flat sewing the ends closed.

Assembly:

Sew horn between the eyes with 1 st between the eyes and horn.  It will be sewn between rounds 8-11. (Can be tricky! You can purchase the Upgrade PDF with photo tutorial by clicking here!)

• Sew each fin on each side of Narwhal where the change in color is Rounds 10-11.
• Sew tail to the back center of Narwhal where the change in color is Rounds 10-11.
• Sew the Narwhal to the center of the blanket. I sewed mine facing a corner.
